Census Journey to Work Data
The Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) is a special tabulation of the U.S. Census for transportation planners. It contains detailed tabulations on the characteristics of workers at their place of residence ("part 1"), at their place of work ("part 2"), and on work trip flows between home and work ("part 3"). RTAMS currently contains pages that display three CTPP datasets:
  1. 2006-2010 American Community Survey (5-Year Estimate)
  2. 2000 Decennial U.S. Census
  3. 1990 Decennial U.S. Census (viewed as 1990-2010 change)

Three RTAMS pages display this data:

  • Mode Share by Area displays the number of workers by area of residence ("part 1") or of work ("part 2") and by 12 means of transportation to work categories for predefined geographies (regions, counties, townships, and subareas of the City of Chicago) in a 37-county region including northeastern Illinois, southeastern Wisconsin, and northwestern Indiana.
  • Mode Share by Municipality displays the number of workers by municipality of residence ("part 1") or of work ("part 2") and by 12 means of transportation to work categories for municipalities in the 12-county RTAMS area.
  • Work Trip Flows displays work trip flows ("part 3") by over 200 predefined geographies (regions, counties, suburban and rural townships, and subareas of the City of Chicago) by 5 means of transportation to work categories for a 37-county region including northeastern Illinois, southeastern Wisconsin, and northwestern Indiana.
